installation help needed

Posted by Richard Terpilowski at June 29. 2008

Whoops. I posted this in general discussions before I found this section.
I got a recent mag with a LXFDVD97 Slackware 12 DVD. On a spare parttion
I tried to install it. Created a linux partition using cfdisk, entered
network.it semmed to find the network, typed pcmcia, it enabled
that.Typed mkswap /dev/hda2, it came up with some info, then typed sync.
it came back to the prompt.
Then typed swapon /dev/hda2 and it came back to the prompt, then typed
setup, went through the full install which seemed to go OK until it got
stuck with kernal panic not syncing no killable process. ad to manually
turn off PC and then back on and chose windows in the lilo boot
selection. Is this problem solvable?
Richard.

Ok, backtracking a little .. this sounds like you've installed Linux on your PC, but the linux generates a Kernel panic when you try to boot it ?

Without the complete screen / panic message, it's difficult to know what the cause is .. would suggest one of two options;

a. Boot the linux partition and either copy-type or take a picture of the screen with the message and post here
b. Try an Ubuntu CD

Hi,

It looks like that particular kernel version doesn't get on with your hardware. (I've seen it happen before here.)

I'd reccomend that you go to http://ubuntu.com and try installing with the CD from there.
(Download it, or use shipit, with which Ubuntu will send you a free CD)

Also, so that you are aware, we can move topics to a different section, so you don't need to worry about posting in the wrong area.

When it finishes going through the ibstallation script it says,
kernal panic not syncing UFS unable to mount root fs unknown burn (3,2)
I probly have to re-install it from fresh. As far as I'm aware before you can enter pre-install text you have to format the drive, and then,
mkswap swapon pcmcia network all followed by /dev/hda2, hda2 being the partition I'm using. Any corrections, adjustments, additions that are needed to make the installation work will be appreciated.
