A question for VM gurus

I have a “Topfield PVR” which permits data to be transferred to/from it using USB.

So, is it possible to use its software and its USB device drivers under XP running inside on a VM on Linux?

Yes, I know that the free version of VMWare Server does USB pass-throughs fine, so it should work. (Done it here with a usb key )

I am running windows xp but have downloaded UBUNTO 7.10 to my desktop to try it out. When I clicked on the icon to open it, I was informed that there was some software required. I do not know where to get this from or what I am looking for. I would appreciate any help.
