If you're running on Ubuntu (recent) you should find that the
NetworkManager plugin provides a PPP plugin which will do most / all of
the work for you. I'm currently using it with a 3G broadband modem
without any problems ..
Alternatively if you're happier on the command line, try wvdial.
In fact if you do;
wvdialconf
It will automatically scan for modems for you and write out much of what you need to connect.
Other files to fill in would be;
/etc/ppp/peers/
/etc/chatscripts/
