Monitor resolution no longer accepted
Hi all,
Using dual-boot W2K/Fedora Core 2.
Due to a recent move, my monitor broke and I had to replace it.
Attempting to boot into runtime level 5 of Linux produces the monitor
error message (i.e. not a linux error) that the resolution is out of
range. This is presumably because the stored resolution etc. is for the
old monitor.
I've tried using the Fedora Core 2 disks to 'upgrade' the machine to fix the problem to no avail.
I've tried using the Fedora rescue facility and Tom's RootBoot to
no avail as I'm not sure where I'm supposed to be looking in order to
fix this problem.
Any ideas?
Hi, welcome to linux.co.uk,
Boot your machine in linux, and once it's loaded, and you've got the error messages, hit
CTRL-ALT-F1
to get a console.
cd to /etc/X11/
and then look inside that folder. There will be either a
"xorg.conf" file or a "xfx.conf" file. If you edit the one that is
there, and look for hsync and vsync values. You need to expand them to
match your monitors specification. Save the file. To test the setup,
type
"/etc/init.d/xdm restart". You *should* automatically be pulled back out of the console.
If you need to edit it again, just follow the instructions from the top again
hth,
Johnathon
