new to this, cant install suse 10.1

I've been given two discs for suse 10.1, open suse 10.1 1386 - 32 bit virsion and same only live dvd, but i cant run or install. can you help me ??? What am I doning wrong ????

i am installing CA Unicenter to Linux 2.4 build and it will not allow me to install because its thinks the root user is invalid.
we believe the fault lies with Linux because of a segment fault:
[root@mexico root]# id -Gn root
Segmentation fault

Can you please advise?
